Psycho Image Analysis 3

This is a shot after the infamous shower scene. The scene is very effective to the audience and adds more interest to the film. The scene uses collision cutting because the murder is shot with a very fast sequence of shots but at the end you get a slow, lengthy shot of the rotation away from Marion’s eye. This connotes how the life has been taken from her and also links with the way the blood gets washed down the plughole. The blood being drained shows us her life being washed away.
The use of camera angles in this shot is effective because it connotes how hopeless Marion’s body is as she lays on the bathroom floor. You see no gore in this shot but you feel sympathetic to Marion as you know the pain she went through to die.

Psycho Image Analysis 2

This screenshot is from the scene where Arbogast enters the Bates home. The scene is shot at a high angle looking down on the character as he walks up the stairs. The lighting used in this scene adds tension whilst Arbogast walks up the stairs and the dramatic music, parallel starts when Norman runs out from the bedroom dressed in his mum’s clothes wielding a knife. This scene is followed by a collision cut, moving from the slow build-up to a quick sequence of shots for the murder scene of Arbogast with Norman stabbing his face.

This scene uses a lot of montage because Hitchcock was a fan on montage films so he placed them in his own. The scene starts with slow movement and then cuts in to a fast montage to shock the audience whilst Arbogast is being killed.

Psycho Image Analysis 1

This image shows us a close up of Normans preserved mum who he placed in the cellar of his house. The scene links closely to the life of the serial killer Ed Gein (who was arrested in 1957, just three years before Psycho was released) because he dug up his mother’s body and preserved the corpse. The use of close ups and low key lighting in this scene adds more tension when the body is turned around and it also scares the audience when they realise that it’s a dead body. With the film being shot in black and white it adds a further dark gloomy effect on the body.

This scene indicates to us how Hitchcock used expressionist camera angles to scare the audience and add tension to each scene. The use of a cellar also creates an uncomfortable atmosphere because audiences at the time would have known the story of Ed Gein. This included the whole audience as it was a major story in the time the film was released.

Drag Me To Hell Poster Analysis

Drag me to hell is an American horror/thriller that was released in 2009.

The main image on this poster is of a young attractive female victim that looks like she is being pulled into hell by demons. The victim looks like she is struggling to get away from the demons but is not strong enough. The hands that are grabbing her have long painted fingernails which tell us that they are also female. The fact that the main characters in this poster are female shows us that this film is aimed at a male target audience.

The dark background in this poster tells us that the worst scenes are filmed in the night time to give a scary felling. The house in the background could be the victims which suggest that she is wealthy or lives with an upper class family.

The main colours in this image are red and orange which have been used for the fire that represents hell. These colours have also been used to catch the viewer’s eye so they would watch the movie. Black has been used in the background to show darkness and danger creating a creepy look to the poster which emphasizes how much of a horror this film is.

The font in this poster is a simple font written in capitals to draw the viewer’s eye to the image displayed in the poster. The title looks like it has got some blood splattered across it which tells me that there will be some blood in this film.

The tagline in this poster is a small paragraph explaining who the main character is and it also gives you an idea of what will happen to her. Telling us that she lives a good life tells us that the start of the film will have the happy beginning but a twist will come about a third of the way in.

Silent Scream Poster Analysis

The movie silent scream is an American movie filmed in 2005. This movie is also known as ‘the retreat’.
The main image in this poster looks like a female victim of some serious torture.  The image shows us that the person torturing this woman is making sure that she is unable to scream which links to the title of the movie.
We only see the victims face in this image to give us the feeling that she is suffering as much torture as possible. The way that the eyes are looking could show us that she is looking up to the killer/torturer and she cannot do anything about it.
Apart from the victim in this poster the producer only used the colour black in the background to show danger/threat. White is used for the title so that it stands out over the background. Some red is used in the eyes to catch the viewer’s eyes and show them how much pain is being put on her appealing to a male target audience.
The title for this poster is written in a font that looks like it has had chunks taken from it looking like it has been tortured. They have chosen this font to link with the story line of this movie where there is a lot of torture.
The tagline ‘pray someone hears you’ tells us that this film is based in a location where not many people go to or the torturer is going to try and make sure that no one will be able to hear the pain that the victims are going through. The title helps relate to this and helps to appeal to a male target audience.
In conclusion, I believe that the target audience for this film is males that enjoy watching torture.

Saw 2 Poster Analysis

Saw 2 is an American/Canadian horror film released in 2005.
The main image in this picture is not the killer or a victim in this film but it is the puppet made by the killer. The producers have chosen to use the puppet to emphasise that he is used to hide the killer in the movie so he is not in the game.
They only use the head of the puppet in this poster for people to remember his face so you know there is going to be danger when he is around. The puppet takes up at least half of the poster to show its importance in this movie. The puppet has been angled in a position so that it is looking down and grinning at the title to show that is has a lot of power in the film.
The majority of this poster uses black and red to show the death and danger of the film. White is used for the title to make it stand out over the background image. A lot of red is used in this poster to show the colour of blood and so it catches the viewer’s eye.
The font used for the main title is written in a way so it looks like someone has scratched it into something. They have used this title to show that there is going to be some pain/torture in this film and people are going to try and escape. To show that this movie is the 2nd film in this series, they have used 2 dirty/bruised fingers to show the pain that someone is going to endure throughout this film. The fingers look like they are from a female which tells us that a woman is going to end up in pain or possibly dead which will appeal to a male target audience.
The tagline ‘oh yes… there will be blood.’ Tells us that this movie is going to be gory and there will be a lot of pain or deaths throughout the movie to appeal with the male target audience. This could also tell us that there will be a character in this film that enjoys the sight of torture and blood.
In conclusion, this film is almost certainly aimed at a male target audience who like to watch people in pain or being tortured.
